Microsoft Windows 7 Now Available Through University Licensing Programs
Monday, November 9, 2009
CSSD has completed testing of Microsoft's Windows 7 operating system to determine its compatibility with University software products, enterprise services, and enterprise systems. Windows 7 is now available to students, faculty, and staff through the University's Software Distribution Services program.
As with any new operating system release, some software applications or services may not install or work correctly with Windows 7 until new versions of those packages become available. A list of software packages that are not yet compatible with Windows 7 is available on our Web site and will be updated regularly as compatible versions are released. Please note that the PittNet Complete CD is not compatible with Windows 7.
If you are considering upgrading to Windows 7, you may want to download and run Microsoft's Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor to see if your PC is ready for Windows 7. Additionally, it is important that Windows 7 users download and install the latest version (11.0.5) of Symantec Endpoint Protection from software.pitt.edu.
Important Upgrade Note for Users of Windows XP: Please note that the Upgrade option is not available in Windows 7 Setup when installing Windows 7 on a computer running Windows XP. However, you can use Windows Easy Transfer to migrate files and settings from Windows XP to Windows 7 on the same computer. To do this, you must first copy files to a removable media. You will then install Windows 7 and migrate your files back from the removable media onto your computer.
Windows 7 is provided as part of the University's Microsoft Campus Software agreement. It is available to University of Pittsburgh students at no cost and to faculty and staff for $115. Students, faculty, and staff can obtain a copy of Windows 7 from Software Distribution Services at 203 Bellefield Hall. Students can also pick up Windows 7 at any campus computing lab with a valid Pitt ID.
Documentation explaining how to connect to Wireless PittNet and PittNet with Windows 7 is available in the Help Sheets section of our Web site.
