Accounts Overview

Your account is created automatically when you enter the University as a student or when you are hired as a faculty or staff member. For students a letter will be sent to you upon creation of your University computing account with your username and an assigned password. For faculty and staff, the RC Administrator for your area will receive your account information.

There are three important elements connected to your computing and e-mail account:

    • USERNAME: Consists of a combination of letters (based on your name) and numbers. A student named Pamela R. Smith, for example, may have the username prs15. Your username is unique.
    • PASSWORD: To protect the security of your account, your username must be used in conjunction with a password that only you know. When your account is created, a temporary password is assigned. The account letter sent to you when the account is created explains how to determine your temporary password.

Note: To keep your information secure, CSSD will never ask for your password through e-mail or over the phone.

    • E-MAIL ADDRESS: Your University e-mail address consists of your username followed by "@pitt.edu." From the example above, Pamela's e-mail address will be: prs15@pitt.edu.
    • Note: An INBOX on the University’s IMAP service will be created along with your user account, and can be accessed through my.pitt.edu. Your University e-mail address is used by the University for all official electronic mail. If you choose to read your e-mail at a different e-mail address (such as Hotmail, Yahoo!, or UPMC), it is important that you forward your University e-mail to that address. You can use the online account management tools at accounts.pitt.edu to set your e-mail forwarding address.
