Pitt Printing: Using the Service

Overview

The University of Pittsburgh Printing service enables students to send print jobs from any location to Pitt Print Stations located in the CSSD Computing Labs and remote locations across campus including all residence halls. You can print from Computing Labs and Computer Kiosks, as well as almost any device with an Internet connection whether you are on or off campus. Pitt Printing enables remote printing from:

  • Personal computers with an Internet connection
  • Computer Kiosks
  • Computers in the Computing Labs
  • Smartphones and tablets

Pitt Printing software is available for download at the Software Download Service at My Pitt for Mac OS X 10.8 and higher and 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 7, 8, and 10. Linux machines located in Computing Labs can also send print jobs to Pitt Printers. Follow the instructions below to use the service.

Send a Print Job to the Pitt Print Queue

 

Send a Print Job While On Campus (from Computer Kiosks or Computing labs)

The Pitt Printing software is already installed on all Computer Kiosks and all computers in the Campus Computing Labs. To send a print job:

1.  Open the file you would like to print and select the Print command.

2.  A Print window will display. Select the printer called “Pitt Color Print Station” or "Pitt B&W Print Station A/B" (either A or B will work) and click OK.

Note: This printer option will already be selected as the default in all Campus Computing Labs. You can change this setting to send your print job to Lab printing if you wish. See a Computing Lab Consultant for assistance. 

3.  Your print job is sent to either the color or black & white print queue. You may print your color print job from any color Pitt Print Station in the Labs, or black & white print job from any black & white Pitt Print Station on campus.

Note:  Your print jobs are stored in the queue for 48 hours.  If you do not print them within that time, they are deleted.  Please refer to the “Pick up Your Print Jobs” section of this document for more information.

 

Send a Print Job from a Personal Computer

An Internet connection is required to download the Pitt Printing Client via a Web browser. This software is available for download from the Software Download Service. To download the Pitt Printing Client, complete the following steps.

1.  Log in to the Software Download Service at My Pitt with your University Computing Account username and password.  Select University of Pittsburgh from the vendor list.  Download the Pitt Printing software and install it on your computer. You can choose the version that you need for your Mac, Windows 32-bit, or Windows 64-bit computer. You will only need to install this software once.

Note:  For detailed instructions, refer to the help sheet Installing the Pitt Printing Client.

2.  Open the file you would like to print and select the Print command.

3.  A Print window will display.  Select the printer called either “Pitt Color Print Station" or “Pitt B&W Print Station" and click OK.

Note: If you do not see “Pitt Color Print Station" download the latest Pitt Printing Client from the Software Download Service at My Pitt.

4.  A Pharos Print Job Details window will appear. Enter your University Computing Account username and password then click Print.

Note: If you send additional print jobs during the same login session on your computer, you do not need to provide your username. Instead, your password will be cached and you can proceed to step 5.

5.  Your print job is sent to either the color or black & white print queue. You may print your color print job from any color Pitt Print Station in the Labs, or black & white print job from any black & white Pitt Print Station on campus.

Send a Print Job using MobilePrint

Note: For detailed information about MobilePrint, please refer to the MobilePrint FAQ.

1. Send an email message to either colorprint@pitt.edu or mobileprint@pitt.edu with an attachment of the file that you want to print or enter the information that you want to print in the body of the email message.

 

Pick Up Your Print Jobs

1.  Go to either a color Pitt Print Station in the Campus Computing Labs or any black & white Pitt Print Station location on campus.

2.  Swipe your University ID card through the card swipe attached to the display, or touch the screen next to the printer and enter your University username and password.

3.  The Pitt Print Station will display the jobs you submitted. Touch the screen to highlight the job that you want to print.  Touch Print to print a single job.  Touch Print All to print all of the jobs in your queue.

Note: To delete a print job, highlight the job and touch Delete. Deleted jobs cannot be retrieved.

4.  The printer will begin printing your jobs.  To avoid printer jams, wait until all your jobs are done printing before removing them from the printer’s output tray.

5.  Touch Exit on the screen and pick up your print jobs.
