Pitt Text Message Updates: Administrator's Guide

Overview

Pitt Text Message Updates lets administrators in University Departments or Divisions communicate information, events, and activities to students that sign up for this service. You can use Pitt Text Message Updates to send messages to students using the following methods:

  • email to their University email address (username@pitt.edu)
  • text messages (SMS)
  • social media posts through Twitter and/or Facebook

    Note: To send a Pitt Text Message Update message to Twitter or Facebook, you have to give Pitt Text Message Updates permission to use these account(s). Instructions for using Pitt Text Message Updates with Twitter or Facebook are provided in this document. You only need to perform this setup process in Pitt Text Message Updates once per Twitter or Facebook account.

This document explains how administrators can access a Pitt Text Message Updates portlet on My Pitt to send text messages (SMS), email messages, and Twitter and Facebook posts to student subscribers.

Setup Pitt Text Message Updates to Use Twitter and Facebook

By default, your Pitt Text Message Updates account lets you send messages using email and SMS text messaging. If you plan to Send Pitt Text Message Updates messages to Twitter or Facebook, follow these setup instructions, otherwise you can skip to the next section.

Note: If you wish to send messages to Twitter and Facebook you must perform the steps in this section two times.

  1. Log in to My Pitt at my.pitt.edu.
  2. Move the mouse cursor over My Resources. From the drop down menu, click your division or departmental community link.
  3. On the community page for your University Department or Division, click the Send NSS Message link.
  4. Click the Edit Community Preferences button in the upper right part of the message window.

  5. Click the Allow access to Twitter account link or the Allow access to Facebook account link.
     
    To add Twitter, click the Allow access to Twitter account link. To add Facebook, click the Allow access to Facebook account link

    Note: As a new user, you may see the following warning as you have not yet set up your Twitter or Facebook account to use Pitt Text Message Updates.

  6. You will be asked to authorize the use of your account with Pitt Text Message Updates. For Twitter enter the account login information then click Allow.  For Facebook enter the account login information then click Login.

  7. Note: After you login to Facebook, you may have to complete additional steps to give Pitt Text Message Updates permission to use Facebook.
  8. You will be returned to Message Portlet Preferences window. Repeat steps 5 and 6 if you need to add an additional Facebook or Twitter account. Otherwise continue to step 8.
    Note: You may authorize one Twitter and one Facebook account at a time to use Pitt Text Message Updates. If you wish to change a Twitter or Facebook account that is associated with Pitt Text Message Updates, proceed to the Remove Facebook and Twitter from Pitt Text Message Updates section of this document.
  9. To send Pitt Text Message Updates messages through either Twitter or Facebook you also need to add one or more of these social media services to your Pitt Text Message Updates portlet. Check the box next to Allow posts to Twitter, Allow posts to Facebook, or both check boxes then click Save.

  10. A confirmation messages indicates that your changes have been saved.
  11. Click the Close button. The preferences window will close and you will see that Twitter or Facebook will be added as additional options for you to send messages through the Pitt Text Message Updates service.

Sending Messages Using Pitt Text Message Updates

  1. Log in to My Pitt at my.pitt.edu.
  2. Move the mouse cursor over My Resources. From the drop down menu, click your division or departmental community link.
  3. On the community page for your University Department or Division, click the Send NSS Message link.
  4. On the Send NSS Message page, enter a Message. 
    Note: Text message services (SMS) provided by mobile phone providers often have different limits associated with the number of characters that a single message can contain. Pitt Text Message Updates messages can have no more than 140 characters, including spaces.  A counter indicates this information.
  5. Select one or more methods through which to send a message. If you are sending messages to Twitter or Facebook you will need to check the appropriate box first.
    Note: If you use Twitter or Facebook you must setup Pitt Text Message Updates to use these accounts. Follow the instructions in the previous section of this document.

  6. When you are ready to send the message click the Send button.
  7. The message will be sent to all the students who have subscribed to the service.

    Note: The Pitt Text Message Updates portlet tells you how many Pitt Text Message Updates subscribers you have that will receive your message.
  8. A confirmation message will be displayed indicating that the message has been sent successfully.

Remove Facebook and Twitter from Pitt Text Message Updates

You can remove the Twitter and Facebook accounts from Pitt Text Message Updates. Using this feature removes both Twitter and Facebook accounts from Pitt Text Message Updates. If you use this feature and wish to add Twitter of Facebook to Pitt Text Message Updates again you will need to follow the instructions in the Setup Pitt Text Message Updates to Use Twitter and Facebook section of this document.

  1. Log in to My Pitt at my.pitt.edu and navigate to the Send NSS Message link .
  2. Click the Edit Community Preferences button in the upper right part of the message window.
  3. From Message Portlet preferences click Reset.

  4. You will receive a confirmation message that the settings have been cleared.
