Green IT Initiatives - Overview

Learn about some of our Green IT initiatives:

Self-Service Account Management

  • Who: Students

  • What: Incoming students now can activate their University Computing Accounts online.

  • How: Students no longer receive account information via hard copy mail. This not only saves paper, but it also reduces carbon emissions since trucks and airplanes no longer have to deliver our letters.

Pitt Printing

  • Who: Students

  • What: Send print jobs from anywhere to Pitt Print stations located in theĀ  computing labs, most residence halls, and other high-traffic areas throughout campus.

  • How: Pitt Printing reduces multiple print jobs and helps eliminate those jobs that are printed but never picked up. To date, Pitt Printing has saved about 100,000 sheets of printed-then-discarded paper. It is about 20 times less wasteful than full-service printing.

Read Green

  • Who: Faculty and Staff

  • What: Faculty and staff are automatically subscribed to receive many University paper-based mailings electronically - right to their University email!.

  • How: A total of 674,906 pieces of printed bulk mail and 538,893 Read Green messages were delivered to Pitt faculty and staff in fiscal year 2012-13 (compared to more than 1.2 million pieces of printed bulk mail in 2009-10). Read Green saves paper and reduces waste by delivering paper-based mail to your email address.

Server Consolidation

  • Who: Faculty and staff

  • What: Virtual servers allow one machine to do the job of many. Using server virtualization, Technology Services has been able to consolidate over 300 servers onto a VMware cluster made up of just 30 computers.

  • How: Fewer computers mean less power is needed to run them and less energy is required to cool them. Virtual server hosting can also help departments pay only for the hardware resources they need, saving money and resources.

Cell Phone Recycling Program

  • Who: Students, faculty, staff

  • What: Deposit your old cell phones, PDAs, smart phones, and accessories at permanent recycling drop boxes across campus.

  • How: "E-waste" has become a growing problem that greatly impacts our environment. Recycling your cell phone helps to keep landfills and watersheds free from the toxins contained in discarded electronic devices.

Web Conferencing

  • Who: Faculty and staff

  • What: Web conferencing allows you to schedule and attend meetings anywhere in the world without leaving your office. Collaborate and share documents online in a virtual meeting room.

  • How: Eliminating unnecessary travel helps to reduce the University's carbon footprint. Sharing documents online also saves paper.

Student Computing Labs

  • Who: Students

  • What: The computers and lab facilities are updated annually. Energy efficiency is an important consideration whenever we select new computers for our labs.

  • How: All machines currently feature LCD displays, which use less power and generate less heat than CRT displays. This year, the computers that will replace our older machines are Energy Star 5.0 and EPEAT Gold-compliant, and utilize high-efficiency power supplies.
