The University's Faculty Information System – Symplectic Elements – provides a single point of organization, presentation, and reporting of scholarly and research activities.  From publications and research data to grants, teaching and professional activities, Elements can be used to collect, understand, and showcase scholarly activities while making the data available for repurpose and reuse.

The core functionality of Elements is the continuous, automated capture of research output data from multiple external and internal sources, using simple workflows to reduce the administrative burden on researchers, librarians and administrators.  Integrations with other institutional systems help to reduce the burden of rekeying and re-entry of information saving time and effort.

The Faculty Information System is delivered through a secure, web-based interface providing all University of Pittsburgh faculty a unique, customizable profile.  Access to the system requires the use of a University of Pittsburgh computing account.  Users can customize their profiles using the convenient menu-driven options for managing, building, and curating personal information.  The system includes search capabilities for searching and viewing of profiles across the institution and related publications using simple and advanced criteria.  Online author identifier tools such as ORCiD, Scopus, and others can be used to fine-tune the automated collection of publications and auto-claiming.

CVs, Biosketches, and annual reports can be exported with just a few clicks.  External profiles, links to items and finding colleagues can be performed from the user’s profile page.  Users can select and manage delegates to assist in updating and curation of profile information.
