Vendor Maintenance Affects Some Software Downloads on Feb. 7

Kivuto, the service provider for pitt.onthehub.com, will be performing maintenance on Tuesday, February 7 outside the University’s standard downtime period. Access to download software through pitt.onthehub.com, including Microsoft software for personal purchase by faculty and staff, will be unavailable between 7:00 and 9:00 a.m. during the maintenance period.

Network Maintenance to Affect Several Buildings on Feb. 11

Network equipment will be upgraded during the standard downtime period on Saturday, February 11 beginning at 11:00 p.m. The work is expected to be completed by 5:00 a.m. on Sunday, February 12. 

Wired and wireless network service will be briefly affected in the following locations:

  • Hillman Library
  • Bridgeside Point
  • Mervis Hall
  • Sennott Square
  • Posvar Hall
  • Network traffic (MPLS) to UPMC from Biomedical Science Tower 3 (BST3)

Wired and wireless network service may also be affected in the following buildings:

  • Chevron Building
  • Eberly Hall
  • Biomedical Science Tower 3 (BST3)

New Versions of OpenSSL Released

The OpenSSL Project has released several new versions of its OpenSSL software to fix a number of security issues. The new releases include these versions:

  • 1.0.2a
  • 1.0.1m
  • 1.0.0r
  • 0.9.8zf

CSSD recommends that users review the OpenSSL security advisory and upgrade to the appropriate version.

CSSD also recommends that all users install Symantec Endpoint Protection software and use the LiveUpdate feature to get the latest virus definitions.  Students, faculty, and staff can download  Symantec Endpoint Protection at no cost through the Software Download Service at My Pitt

Phishing Alert: Mail Quota Exceeded

Computing Services and Systems Development (CSSD) is responding to reports of a new email phishing scam being received by members of the University community. The email claims that you have exceeded your mail storage limit and will not be able to send or receive new mail unless you click on a link to revalidate your mailbox. The email message actually links to a harmful Web site.

If you receive this message (or any message similar to it), delete it without replying, opening any attachments, or clicking on any links within the email. The following is a sample of the recent fraudulent email.

CSSD strongly recommends that you do not reply to unsolicited emails or emails from unverifiable sources. Avoid clicking on links contained in such emails, as these may lead to sites that contain harmful software. If a link looks suspicious, you can hover over the link with your mouse to preview the URL without clicking on it.

In addition, CSSD recommends that all users install Symantec Endpoint Protection software and use the LiveUpdate feature to get the latest virus definitions. As a complement to Symantec Endpoint Protection, CSSD offers a free version of Malwarebytes for individuals and departments. Students, faculty, and staff can download Malwarebytes and Symantec Endpoint Protection at no cost through the Software Download Service at My Pitt. Departments can submit a help request to obtain Malwarebytes for multiple machines.
