Tech-Savvy Ways to Spend Winter Break

Winter break is the perfect time to unwind and recharge, but it can also be a great opportunity to check off some tech-related tasks. Whether you're looking to learn something new, organize your digital life, or just relax, we’ve got some tips to make your winter break both productive and enjoyable.

1. Learn Something New with LinkedIn Learning

Expand your skills by diving into LinkedIn Learning's vast library of courses. With topics ranging from coding to creativity, there’s something for everyone — and it's free with your Pitt account! Better yet, complete a full learning path to earn a certificate that will impress potential employers or advance in your own career. Just log into linkedinlearning.pitt.edu to search for and complete on-demand courses.

 2. Read Your Favorite Books on Any Device

Borrow books for free from Pitt libraries and beyond! Whether it’s an e-book, audiobook, or physical copy, take some time to dive into that book you’ve been meaning to read or learn about a topic you’ve been curious about.

3. Declutter Your Digital Life

Storage creep is real! Use this downtime to tidy up your OneDrive, Google Drive, or phone photos. Deleting unnecessary files will free up space and keep your devices running smoothly! We recommend that you delete earlier drafts of completed documents, duplicate photos, and other unneeded files. You can also download files onto an external drive for archiving purposes if you don’t need to actively store them but don’t want to permanently delete them.

4. Update Your LinkedIn Profile

A polished LinkedIn profile is a powerful networking tool. Use winter break to update your profile. Take a new professional photo. Add recent accomplishments and new skills that aren’t yet listed. Connect with classmates, colleagues, and professionals in your field. While you’re there, don’t forget to follow Pitt IT on LinkedIn for tech tips and updates!

5. Search for Professional Opportunities

Start applying for internships, volunteer positions, or other opportunities through Handshake, Pitt’s comprehensive career services platform. Summer internships and opportunities, or post-graduation jobs, need to be secured well in advance. A little effort now could pay off big in the future!

6. Catch Up on Streaming and Podcasts/Blogs

Relax with your favorite shows or podcasts. Whether it's binge-watching a series or learning something new from a podcast or blog, now’s the time to enjoy.  While you’re at it, catch up on the Panther Bytes blogs you may have missed this past semester! Just head over to technology.pitt.edu/blog to read up!

7. Download a Meditation App and Destress

Recharge your mental health by downloading a meditation or mindfulness app. Now is a great time to start a gratitude journal or tracking your healthy habits. While you’re at it, track your sleep patterns. It’s tempting to stay up all night binge watching the shows you missed, and then sleep all day. But while catching up on sleep is essential, keeping a consistent schedule (even if it’s waking up at 10:30 a.m.) will make your return to campus easier.

8. Stay Safe While Spending Time with Friends and Family

Enjoy quality time with loved ones but remember to prioritize safety. Use the Rave Guardian app Safety Timer to let someone know you’ve arrived safely when traveling home late or in bad weather. Stick with friends when going out and think twice about sharing your phone number or social media handle with people you just met. And keep your devices warm and dry when spending time outdoors!

Make Winter Break Work for You!

Whether you’re aiming for relaxation, productivity, or a mix of both, these activities can help you make the most of your winter break.

Have a restful break, Panthers!
