Strategic Initiatives: PittNet Modernization

5. PittNet Modernization

""

The University’s data network, PittNet, connects students, faculty, and staff to campus and global resources to meet their needs. With smartphones, tablets, and laptops now routinely used by nearly all students on campus, as well as increased use of connected equipment such as clinical carts, the demand for Wi-Fi on campus has steadily risen.

The PittNet Modernization initiative positions us to meet future needs. The next generation of PittNet will be optimized to manage increasing data traffic, security threats, and enable new technologies, such as virtual reality and the Internet of Things. The result will be a more robust, responsive, secure network that enables the Pitt community to stay connected and forge ahead.

Network Improvements

Pitt IT enhanced services this year by expanding network service to facilitate Pitt-UPMC collaboration. We also initiated a project to upgrade PittNet Wi-Fi in classrooms and high-traffic spaces, as well as upgraded regional campus network infrastructure.
